The Heavy-Soil Hero – Sweet, Stout, and Perfect for Pots.

Chantenay Red Cored 2 is an iconic heirloom variety that remains a favorite for its incredible versatility. Known as the "workhorse" of the carrot world, it is specially valued for its ability to push through heavy or clay soils where longer varieties might struggle or fork.

Each pack contains 2000 seeds, producing broad-shouldered, stump-rooted carrots with a classic wedge shape. As the name suggests, it features a strikingly deep orange-red core that is exceptionally sweet and crisp. Whether harvested as "baby" carrots for a gourmet treat or left to reach their full 10-12cm length, they provide a consistent, high-quality crop that is perfect for freezing, canning, or eating fresh.

Product Description

Gourmet Flavour for Every Garden – From Containers to Clay Soils.

  • Exceptional Soil Tolerance: Its short, stout shape allows it to thrive in heavy clay or stony soils where other carrots fail.

  • Superior Sweetness: Famed for its high sugar content and a deep red core that looks beautiful when sliced.

  • Multi-Purpose Harvest: Harvest early as sweet baby carrots or allow to mature for a heavy maincrop yield.

  • Great for Small Spaces: The compact root system makes this one of the best varieties for deep containers and raised beds.

Growing Instructions

  • Variety: Chantenay Red Cored 2 (Stump-rooted)

  • Pack Size: 2000 Seeds

  • Position: Full Sun; adaptable to most soil types, including heavier clay.

  • Sow Outdoors: April to July.

  • Sowing Depth: 1.5cm - 2cm (0.5 - 0.75in).

  • Spacing: Rows 30cm apart; thin to 5cm (2in) for mature roots or 2.5cm for baby carrots.

  • Harvest: June to November (approx. 75-90 days from sowing).

Gardener’s Tip: Chantenay carrots are excellent for "succession sowing." Plant a small amount every 3 weeks from April to July to ensure a continuous supply of tender, sweet carrots throughout the summer and autumn. To deter carrot fly, sow thinly to avoid the need for thinning, or thin only in the late evening when the flies are inactive.
